We are very aware of the conscious mind. It is accessing, calculating and making decisions for most of our wakeful hours. However, it is only the tip of the iceberg. At it's hidden depths, lies the unconscious mind.
Through our experiences as children we arrive at certain conclusions about ourselves, about life and about others. These conclusions lead us to behave and respond in certain ways in order to cope with life as we see it. This is appropriate for a child, however, the unconscious mind holds the record and the responses can be carried through to adulthood.
The unconscious is like an auto pilot, or unseen commander, which deals with our emotions, our imagination, our memories and the autonomic nervous system which controls and regulates our internal organs and systems. We often experience joy, anger, fear and other emotions without understanding why. These responses can bewilder us. What was an appropriate response for a child is no longer appropriate for an adult. New information and change is required.
